Last week we showed you a video created by The Wilsons that featured fan pictures put to one of their songs. This week we’re sharing another way artists can use video to market themselves. In this instance Kevin Montgomery created a vidblog about his 50 states in 50 days tour, taking fans behind the scenes showing them the world of a touring act. As with last week’s featured video, this kind of video doesn’t need to be a big budget feature. That said, it’s important that your video be short (2-3 minutes) and tell a story. Just throwing up raw footage won’t necessarily capture a viewer. Be creative, come up with a format for your documentary style video and include as many interview snippets that help you weave the story line as you can.

For the next several week’s we’ll be taking a look at videos that indie artists are putting together to increase awareness through the Web. In some cases it’s a video following them on the road, visiting them in the studio or … in some cases it’s a music video built for on-line marketing. In most cases it doesn’t take a big budget as is the case with this week’s video! This is The Wilsons fan video for “Mine All Mine,” a song written by the duo in honor of their daughter whom they adopted about a year ago. The lyrics are striking a chord with fans who all jumped in to help put together the video which was built exclusively for the Web. There are a number of positives to this. First, it provides a means of having fans be a part of what you’re doing and feel more connected. It also then means that many more people sharing the video with their friends and ultimately your music making it a win win for everyone.
